Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t

September 22, 2016

No matter what you do in this life you will always be judged. Whether you choose to work in an office from 9 to 5 or quit your job to start your own business, whether you marry young or choose not to marry at all, whether you have kids or decide not to, whatever it is that you choose for yourself, there will always be critics.

Do what you feel in your heart to be rightNow, I write all of this not to seem like a total pessimist, but to make a point. Regardless of what you choose to do with your life, you will be judged. So if something matters to you, do it. Enjoy it. Don’t let what other say (or even that little negative voice inside your own head) get in the way. Follow your heart.

Don’t miss out on anything due to your fear of what others might think. This, of course, is easier said than done and I still struggle with it sometimes. The important thing is that you keep pushing through it. It is far better to be criticized for doing what you enjoy, than to live the life others want for you and be unhappy.

A wise woman once said:

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right- for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”

So let’s make Eleanor Roosevelt proud. Get out there and follow your heart.

What things have you been holding back on because of other people’s opinions?

Love this! So true! My husband and I got married at 20 and we got so much flack for it. We knew it was the right time for us and now everyone else sees it too, but it would’ve been nice to have that support at the time! Ha

That’s how it usually goes with these things. That’s why following your heart is so important. In most cases, you know better than anyone else what is best for you.

I totally agree with this sentiment! You gotta make yourself happy before you can make anyone else happy. Love the Eleanor Roosevelt quote!

This is so true. I got judged for getting married early. I constantly get judged for choosing to not have children. It seems like we can’t make anyone happy, and the best way to live is to simply make ourselves happy. Learning how to do that can be challenging I’ve found, as it seems we (or at least I) was brought up in a society expected to serve others.

Exactly! When you make yourself a priority your happiness grows. Like you said, we can’t make everyone happy, but we sure can make ourselves happy. Thanks for stopping by!

This is so true! Don’t let people be the judge of anything. You do what is best for YOU.

I love this perspective! It’s true: the critics are out there and they’ll never go away. We just need to live our lives without fear. No more trying to please everyone else!

Exactly! We will never please everyone so we might as well please ourselves. Thanks for stopping by, Emily!
